The Afro-Middle East Centre and DAJO Associates invites you to a seminar entitled Birth pangs of democracy in a region experiencing revolutionary ebbs and flows and transitionary politics presented by Dr Larbi Sadiki, senior lecturer at Exeter University, AlJazeera columnist and expert on the Middle East and North Africa region.

About the speaker: Dr Larbi Sadiki is a Tunisian author, political scientist and senior lecturer at the University of Exeter in the UK, specialising in Arab and Middle Eastern democratisation processes. He has received a number of fellowships and awards, including from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, the Heinrich Boell Foundation and the Arab and Islamic Centre at the University of Melbourne. He has published path-breaking books such as Re-thinking Arab Democratization: Elections without democracy and The Search for Arab Democracy: Discourses and Counter-discourses. His forthcoming book, Democratic Transition in the Middle East: Unmaking power will be published in November 2012. Dr Sadiki's academic articles have been published in reputable journals such as Political Studies, the Journal of Middle Eastern Studies, Democratization and Arab Studies Quarterly. His views and opinions are also widely sought and he is a regular columnist for Al-Jazeera's English service.Dr Sadiki holds a PhD in Political Science and International Relations from the Australian National University.
